Aimpoint red dot rifle scopes anyone?

Midway is having another sale on these Aimpoints and I was thinking of mounting one on an AR-15 as a combat sight...

Anyone have experience with these?

I have a red dot on a 10/22 and a mossberg, they work fine. Have a holographic site on the AR. it provides a smaller dot, has variable intensities and eliminates parallax. I dont think red dots do that.

I could be wrong but I think some red dots do eliminate paralax, I have a Millet red dot on one of my shotguns, I'll have to check online and see if they advertise it. If they don't, then it likely doesn't.

For my AK, I have a Kobra holosight, and I know theres no paralax with that. They make a Weaver style quick detach or thumbscrew model also, I highly suggest it. The model I have takes 2 AA's and it only mounts to AK side scope rails. The weaver mount ones take watch type batteries, but a common one you can find online. CR2032? I can't remember.

Google Tantal and find his e-mail address, he's a real good guy and answers all questions. You can probably get the weaver Kobra for around $190. You could try that ATN holosight for $99 on www.midwayusa.com, but it doesn't look nearly as durable as my Kobra is.

Baphomet, how long is your battery life on that Kobra? Also is it low or high profile mount? I might consider one for a Saiga or AK...

Thats the one I bought, looks like I overpaid by $40, do gunshops wonder why people would rather buy their stuff online? Last time I make that mistake. Thanks T&T Gunnery.

The battery life is superb, I actually left mine on for a week on the highest setting (11) and when I took it out of the safe it was still functioning, although a little dim. The batteries are cheap, too. If it winks out at all while shooting, just open the mag compartment and stretch the spring a little. Its indeed paralax free as I thought.

I'm not sure what you mean by high or low profile, I don't think you can see the ironsights through the scope rings though, I'd check but I left it out of state and won't have it back for a few weeks. There are more expensive alternatives out there but it worked fine on my shotgun for puttin slugs through paper coyotes at 50 yards (18" home defense barrel mind you) :tongue_ma:

FACTS: Millet creates a way to attach mount systems that replace the rear sight of your rifle. The mount is all steel and is specially designed for the (ever-so-quick to acquire a target) red dot sight. You can purchase the mount separately or buy the complete sighting system which includes the red dot sight, Angle-Loc rings and base. Special thanks to DDCOVER for the heads up on these guys.
Edit: Sorry I thought you were asking about the Millet red dot. I'm not sure what the battery life is but I've left it on by accident as well, it seems to last quite long but I was using NiMH 2300ah rechargeables. It really depends on the battery you're using (in the AA model at least). I'm not sure what the battery life is in the weaver mount Kobra, you could ask Tantal though and he'd most likely give you a good estimate.

The Kobra is not low profile, you can't use the ironsights with the Kobra attached. With the Weaver mount, however, you could use any number of AK style scope mounts with weaver bases up top. I know they make low and high types, so if you wanted to use ironsights still and have the weaver Kobra attached as well, you could do both.

Heres a picture of the AA model on my WASR-10, my buddy is holding it :D If I bought the weaver model I could mount it on top of my gas tube.

I'd say go with the weaver because you could then put it on any other weaver mount you have regardless of the weapon, BUT, you'd lose your zero to an extent and can't use AA batteries (more common and easier to find rechargeables)

WHAT ABOUT BATTERIES?
The latest version of Kobra (EKP-1S-03) uses regular AA batteires (2). The manual states the battery will last an average of 70 hours with the reticle on a medium setting.

The only suggestion I have to improve it would be to include a lexan lense protector. I cut up a clear CD case and screwed it into the front (there are screws for mounting the sun shade, I put my clear plastic piece between the two). If you've got a friend who's good at sewing, ask them to make a small hood for it with elastic to secure it, so when you're running through dense brush a branch doesn't poke in there and scratch it up.

Howz about Trijicon?

I've read that they have multiple sources of illumination, so batteries are less critical. I'm thinking of getting one.

Trijicon ARE good scopes similar to the Kobra, but if memory serves me, they are at least double the price of a Kobra.

There's another one that the Spec Op guys use, but my memory is shot right now.

They're great. Some models use ambient light to light an amber colored (rather than red) reticle. Get ready to fork over more than $400.
